How to uninstall BlackHole on a Mac.

BlackHole is a virtual audio driver. Existential Audio provides an uninstaller package for each version (2ch, 16ch and 64ch).

Uninstall BlackHole

  1. Quit your audio apps, including Audio MIDI Setup and System Settings.
  2. Download the BlackHole uninstaller for your version (2ch, 16ch or 64ch) from Existential Audio's BlackHole page on GitHub (github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole).
  3. Open it and follow the prompts.
  4. Check BlackHole no longer appears in System Settings › Sound or Audio MIDI Setup.

BlackHole's wiki also documents removing the driver by hand in Terminal; follow it from their page if the uninstaller doesn't work. The driver lives in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL (the Mac-wide Library, not your own).

Afterwards

More audio software: uninstalling audio plug-ins and Native Instruments.

Based on Existential Audio's own README and wiki, checked October 2026. Menu names can change between versions.

Then check for anything BlackHole left behind.

Once the app is gone, Pangalin Uninstaller's free Leftovers scan lists files left behind by apps that are no longer installed, by name and size. Apple's files are never included. It also shows where each one is and moves the ones you choose to the Trash in one go, with Undo.
