How to uninstall Rust on a Mac.

If you installed Rust with rustup (the official way), one command removes Rust and rustup together.

Uninstall Rust

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run the command below and confirm.
rustup self uninstall

It removes rustup's and Cargo's folders in your home folder (~/.rustup and ~/.cargo): every toolchain, and every program you installed with cargo install. Your own projects aren't touched.

Installed Rust with Homebrew instead? Use brew uninstall rust.

Afterwards

More developer tools: clearing developer caches, Docker and Homebrew.

Based on the Rust Book and rustup's documentation, checked October 2026. Menu names can change between versions.

Then check for anything Rust left behind.

Once the app is gone, Pangalin Uninstaller's free Leftovers scan lists files left behind by apps that are no longer installed, by name and size. Apple's files are never included. It also shows where each one is and moves the ones you choose to the Trash in one go, with Undo. It's free.
