How to uninstall Go on a Mac.
Go's documentation describes removing Go by hand: delete its folder and the path file the Mac installer added.
Uninstall Go
- Optional: clear Go's caches first, while Go still works:
go clean -cacheandgo clean -modcache. - In Finder, press ⇧⌘G, go to
/usr/localand move thegofolder to the Trash (enter your password). - If you used the Mac installer package, also remove
/etc/paths.d/gothe same way. - Remove any line you added to your shell profile for
$HOME/go/bin, then open a new Terminal window.
Programs you installed with go install are in ~/go/bin by default; delete that folder too if you don't need them.
Afterwards
- Check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions for anything still named Go; see login items. An app that's still in your Trash can stay listed there until you empty the Trash or restart; that's normal macOS behaviour.
- Empty the Trash when you're sure. Emptying the Trash is permanent.
More developer tools: clearing developer caches, Docker and Homebrew.
Based on Go's own documentation (go.dev), checked October 2026. Menu names can change between versions.
Then check for anything Go left behind.
Once the app is gone, Pangalin Uninstaller's free Leftovers scan lists files left behind by apps that are no longer installed, by name and size. Apple's files are never included. It also shows where each one is and moves the ones you choose to the Trash in one go, with Undo. It's free.
