How to uninstall Microsoft Office and Teams on a Mac.

Office keeps its settings and data in shared folders in your Library, so removing the apps alone leaves gigabytes behind. Microsoft documents exactly which folders to remove. Here are its steps, in order.

Back up Outlook first. Microsoft warns that removing these folders deletes Outlook data stored on your Mac. Mail kept on the server (Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Exchange) comes back when you sign in again, but local-only data doesn't. Also make sure you know your Microsoft account sign-in.

1. Remove the apps

  1. Quit all Office apps.
  2. In Finder, open Applications and ⌘-click Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
  3. Control-click one of them and choose Move to Trash.

2. Remove Office's Library folders

  1. Press ⇧⌘G, type ~/Library/Containers and press Return.
  2. Move any of these that are there to the Trash. Finder shows most by their display name:
    • Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft OneNote
    • Microsoft Error Reporting
    • com.microsoft.netlib.shipassertprocess, com.microsoft.Office365ServiceV2, com.microsoft.RMS-XPCService
  3. Go to ~/Library/Group Containers and move UBF8T346G9.ms, UBF8T346G9.Office and UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost to the Trash.
  4. Remove any Office icons left in the Dock (Control-click › Options › Remove from Dock), then restart your Mac.

Keeping Teams or OneDrive? The UBF8T346G9 folders are shared by Microsoft's apps, so remove them only when you're removing all of them.

Microsoft Teams

  1. Quit Teams: Control-click its Dock icon, hold ⌥ and choose Force Quit.
  2. Move Microsoft Teams from Applications to the Trash.
  3. Teams' local cache, as Microsoft documents it for new Teams, is in ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams and ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2. Remove those too if you're not reinstalling.

Based on the developer's own instructions, checked October 2026. Menu names can change between versions.

Then check for anything Microsoft left behind.

Once the app is gone, Pangalin Uninstaller's free Leftovers scan lists files left behind by apps that are no longer installed, by name and size. Apple's files are never included. It also shows where each one is and moves the ones you choose to the Trash in one go, with Undo.
