How to uninstall an app with Pangalin Space Manager.
Pangalin Space Manager removes an app together with the files it keeps elsewhere, its built-in background items and the privacy permissions you gave it. You see every file first, and everything goes to the Trash unless you choose Homebrew or Delete from Trash…, which are permanent.
1. Find the app
- Click Apps in the sidebar (⌘4). The page has four tabs: Installed, Leftovers, Startup and Backups, with one Rescan button on the right.
- On Installed, apps are grouped by developer. Search, or use the sort menu (size, name, least or most recently used) and Show to narrow the list.
- Click an app to see its details on the right: What is this app?, its size, version, category, when it was last used and installed, its bundle ID and location, and the Genuine? check.
Short tags on each row say how much an app is used, for example Active 8d, Quiet 111d, Cold 7 mo or Auto-starts. Hover over one for the full wording.
2. Open the review
- Click Uninstall… on the app's row, or in its details.
- If the app is running, the button reads Stop & Uninstall…. Pangalin Space Manager asks the app to quit, so it can ask you about unsaved work, and waits a few seconds. If it still hasn't closed, Pangalin Space Manager asks before it force quits.
To remove several apps, tick them and use the Batch uninstall bar. Each app's review opens in turn, so you still see every file.
3. Check the list
The review lists everything that will go, with sizes. Untick anything you want to keep; nothing is permanent until you empty the Trash.
- Background items built into the app are listed without a checkbox: they go with it. Login items and agents are stopped once it's in the Trash. A system item needs administrator rights to stop, so it keeps running until you empty the Trash and restart.
- Files the app's installer or Homebrew lists for it start unticked, because another package may share them. Installer receipts always stay.
- AI apps' models and data (LM Studio and Bionic, Jan, GPT4All, Msty, AnythingLLM, Draw Things, DiffusionBee, ComfyUI and Pinokio) start unticked. A note says when another AI app shares the folder, and Hugging Face's shared cache is kept unless you tick it. Models on a drive that isn't connected are shown but can't be included until you connect it.
- Folders the developer's other apps may share are kept, with a padlock.
- Reset the privacy permissions … had is ticked. Pangalin Space Manager asks macOS to reset them (Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos, Files & Folders, Automation and others). macOS doesn't show which ones the app had or confirm the reset, and it can't be undone; the app asks again if you install it later.
4. Remove it
- Click Move … to Trash (for example Move 6 to Trash). Changed your mind? Edit › Undo Move to Trash (⌥⌘Z) puts it all back while Pangalin Space Manager is open.
- A Last steps for … banner offers what's left: Delete … from Trash… and Open Privacy & Security. System-wide permissions (such as Full Disk Access, Accessibility and Screen Recording) can't be reset by another app, so check them in Privacy & Security and remove the app there if it's still listed. Close the banner with ✕ when you're finished.
- Empty the Trash when you're sure. Until you do, macOS can start the app's built-in items again at your next login.
Delete … from Trash… permanently deletes just that app, so macOS drops its background items at your next restart, without emptying the rest of your Trash. It can't be undone, and needs Full Disk Access.
An uninstall counts toward your free 5 GB by what it actually frees. Resetting permissions is free.
Apps installed with Homebrew
If Homebrew installed the app, the review shows Installed with Homebrew, the brew uninstall --cask command and Uninstall with Homebrew. That keeps Homebrew's records right. Homebrew deletes the app permanently instead of moving it to the Trash, so Edit › Undo can't bring it back; the leftovers you tick still go to the Trash. Pangalin Space Manager runs Homebrew as you and never types your administrator password. If Homebrew stops, use Move … to Trash instead.
Is it the real app?
Every app in Installed gets a coloured tick, checked on your Mac in the background and remembered until the app changes:
- Gold: signed by its known developer (on Pangalin Space Manager's built-in list of known developers), signature intact, notarised or from the Mac App Store.
- Green: signed and notarised by an identified developer that isn't on the list, so only who signed it is shown.
- Amber: unsigned or a broken signature. Only keep it if you trust where it came from.
- Red: possible fake: a listed app signed by someone else, or Apple revoked its signature. Don't open it; download the app again from the developer's own website.
Click ⓘ by the app count for the key (also in Settings › Ticks). Click an app to expand its details: under Genuine? it shows who signed it, whether it was changed since, whether Apple notarised it and where you downloaded it. Ask Apple too asks Apple's servers whether it was revoked; the seal menu by the app count has Ask Apple about all apps… (it goes online, so you confirm first, and can stop it) and Check all again. All of this is free. A tick says who signed an app, never that it's safe.
Apps you already removed
Dragged an app to the Trash yourself? Its support files usually stay behind. Open the Leftovers tab on the Apps page.
- The first time, it says Find leftovers from apps you've removed; click Scan. Later, use Rescan.
- Pangalin Space Manager only offers data it can prove was left behind. It never offers data an installed app, that developer's other apps or macOS still use, and nothing is ticked for you: tick what you want to remove.
- No leftovers from removed apps found is a good result. If it says Couldn't list every installed app, click Rescan before removing anything.
- If anything couldn't be moved, an orange Not everything was done card says what stayed and why.
To be offered this as soon as you drag an app out of Applications, switch on Trash Watcher in Settings › Space Watch. See Use Space Watch.
