Help · Is it safe to delete?
What are sleepimage and swap files?
sleepimage is where a Mac saves a copy of its memory before deep sleep. Swap files are where macOS moves memory when RAM runs short. Both live in /private/var/vm.
Safe to delete? No. macOS manages both. In recent macOS, swap even has its own hidden volume, VM.
What helps instead
- Large swap means memory pressure: quit apps and browser tabs you aren't using, and check Activity Monitor's Memory tab.
- Restarting your Mac clears swap.

Pangalin Space Manager's free scan shows what's using your disk, folder by folder, and labels each item: safe to clean, can move, or needs review. macOS's own files are marked so you don't delete what your Mac needs.
