What is kernel_task on a Mac?
kernel_task is part of macOS itself. When it shows high CPU in Activity Monitor, it's usually doing its job: keeping your Mac's processor from getting too hot.
Can you stop it? No. It's the core of macOS. Apple says it responds to conditions that make the CPU too hot, and doesn't cause them.
What Apple says
Apple explains that kernel_task makes the CPU less available to processes that are using it heavily, so the processor can cool down. When the temperature drops, kernel_task gives the CPU back automatically.
What to do
- Open Activity Monitor and sort by % CPU.
- Look for the app or process (other than kernel_task) using a lot of CPU, and quit it.
- Make sure the Mac's vents aren't blocked and it isn't in direct heat.
