GarageBand and Logic Pro sound libraries.

The instruments, loops and sounds for Logic Pro, MainStage and GarageBand can take tens of gigabytes. You can delete packs you don't use, or move the library to an external drive. Use the app's own commands: moving or deleting the files in Finder can break the apps.

To see how much they use, open System Settings › General › Storage and look at Music Creation.

Logic Pro 12 and MainStage 4

All the sound content lives in one file, Logic Pro Library.bundle, in your Music folder.

Delete packs you don't use

  1. In Logic Pro, choose Logic Pro › Sound Library and click Manage Packs. It shows the size of each pack.
  2. Click Delete next to a pack you don't use, and confirm. You can download it again later.

Move the library to an external drive

  1. Quit Logic Pro and MainStage.
  2. Drag Logic Pro Library.bundle from your Music folder to the external drive. When it has copied, delete the original.
  3. Open Logic Pro. If it doesn't find the library, choose Logic Pro › Settings › General › Sound Library and use Locate to point it at the drive.

Logic Pro 11, MainStage 3 and earlier

  1. Log in with an administrator account. Use a drive formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and not your Time Machine drive.
  2. In Logic Pro, choose Logic Pro › Sound Library › Relocate Sound Library. Click Allow if asked, choose the drive and click Relocate.
  3. Don't rename the drive afterwards. To move the library back, do the same and choose your Mac's disk.

If relocating fails, Apple suggests allowing Removable Volumes for Logic Pro in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Files and Folders.

GarageBand

GarageBand's GarageBand › Sound Library menu can download or reinstall sounds, but has no delete or relocate command. Apple doesn't document a separate way to remove GarageBand's sounds. Check Music Creation in Storage settings for what's there, and leave the files themselves alone.

Know which route your version needs.

Pangalin Space Manager finds the GarageBand and Logic sound library and Apple Loops, reads which version of Logic Pro or MainStage you have, and shows the route Apple documents for that version, with an Open Logic Pro button and Apple's guide. It doesn't move or delete this content itself. Third-party sample libraries it can relocate with you, one at a time.
